WHAT IS CRIME STOPPERS

CRIME STOPPERS is a program that utilizes cooperation of the public and the news media to aid the local police in the fight against crime.

Through the use of CRIME STOPPERS, any citizen that witnesses or has information pertaining to crime, can get his or her information to the police and remain completely anonymous. Cash rewards are also given to individuals whose information leads to the arrest of a criminal suspect.

WHO ADMINISTERS THE PROGRAM

The Marengo CRIME STOPPERS Board of Directors is comprised of concerned citizens from the community of Marengo who oversee the operation of the program.

The Marengo Area CRIME STOPPERS are a part of a County wide organization of CRIME STOPPERS. One centrally operated CRIME STOPPERS number is maintained 24 hours a day. Information received at this number is distributed to the proper authorities throughout McHenry County.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK

If a person witnesses a crime or has any information pertaining to a crime, they can call the area CRIME STOPPERS number. Upon receiving a call, CRIME STOPPERS logs the date, time, and summary of the caller's information. The caller is then issued a secret code number for identification to be used in subsequent transactions.

The caller is instructed to call back at a later date and identify themselves with the secret code number. The caller will then be brought up to date on the progress of the investigation of the crime. If the information the caller has given has lead to the arrest of a criminal, arrangements will be made with the caller to receive a CASH reward in a manner that will preserve their anonymity.

The amount of the reward will be determined by the Board of Directors and the Police Coordinator based on the significance of the caller's information concerning the arrest. Rewards can amount up to $1000.

CRIME STOPPERS provides complete anonymity to overcome the fear of involvement and cash rewards to overcome community apathy towards crime.

REWARDS ARE PAID FOR ARREST ON PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND OTHER CRIMES THAT HAVE OCCURRED IN THE MARENGO AREA.
