| The Groundwater Protecton Ordinance legally regulates and manages specific activities within a specified area which pose the greatest risk to the public water supply.
The City of Marengo's water supply is served 100% from groundwater. The ordinance protects the public health by protecting the quality of the municipal water supply. Meetings of the Groundwater Protection Technical Advisory Committee are posted at City Hall and at the Public Works building. Marengo Groundwater Protection Back On Track Early in 2006 Marengo assembled a committee to restart their efforts to prevent groundwater contamination. The Ordinance requires that users of material substances that are harmful to the City’s well water source (Groundwater) utilize Best Management Practices to prevent spills that could reach that critical resource. The Ordinance applies to locations within the 5 year recharge area. The committee began with reviewing the existing ordinances for any necessary changes, developed missing documentation/forms, and outlined a procedure for enforcement. The committee will begin the new year with a mailing to parties within the 5 year recharge zone. The mailing will include forms, a substance list and a definition of quantities of concern. Once it is determined that you have quantities of material that should be monitored; you will fill out the forms and an inspection team will come and review your location and documentation. Aside from a site inspection, the team will want to see how you plan to handle the monitored material, your plan of action should a spill occur and what company you plan to call to clean up the spill. Currently the City of Marengo’s Ordinance is based on the 5 year recharge area as defined by Wells 6 & 7. The City, working with the Illinois Rural Water Association, has requested that the IEPA redefine the recharge area to include the new Well #8. |
