Where can I pay my water bill?
Your water bill can be paid at City Hall between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. Payments can also be dropped in our drop box by the door on Prairie Street. Payment can be made by cash or check. Payments can also be made at Brandt's Pharmacy during their regular business hours.
Does the City require building permits?
Yes. Building permits are required for all structural alteration, additions and repair work. Contact the Building & Public Works Department for permit requirements and applicable fees. A minimum of five working days is required for issuance of permits.
How do I contact my Alderman?

Can I burn leaves in my yard?
No. Burning leaves, yard refuse or any other material is prohibited within the city limits.
What is the leaf or brush pick-up schedule?
The schedules for both the leaf and brush pick-up will be posted as soon as they are available on the City's website. Brush is picked-up by the City, and leaves are picked up by MDC Environmental Services.
Can I have a bonfire?
Bonfires are allowed with permit only. Permits can be applied for at the Police Department.
When are the City Council and/or Planning and Zoning meetings?
The Marengo City Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the 3rd Monday of each month. Meetings are held at the Marengo City Hall and start at 7:00 p.m. Agenda's are available for review on the City website starting the Thursday before the meeting.
Do I need a City sticker for my car?
Yes. Anyone moving into the city limits is required to obtain a City Sticker for each vehicle owned or registered in this City. Plus State statute requires you to change the address on your drivers license and registration within 10 days of moving. The penalty for failure to display a valid sticker is $150 fine, which goes to $300 after one week if not paid. Vehicle stickers may be purchased at City Hall during normal business hours.
Sticker Fees: all vehicle types: $20, senior citizens: $5. A replacement sticker is $2 with old sticker or sticker scrapings. Fees double after July 31st. New residents have 60 days in which to purchase their vehicle stickers. New vehicles must have a vehicle sticker within 30 days.
Is a permit required to have a garage sale?
Yes. You are allowed to have two garage sales a year. A permit is required for a $5.00 fee. There are restrictions regarding the size and where you can place advertising signs.
Can I park my car on the street overnight?
No. Parking is not allowed on residential streets between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Parking is not allowed on any street in the business district between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Parking is not allowed on ANY STREET in the event of an ice storm, or when 2 inches or more of snow has fallen.
Who is responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks?
The person occupying the ground floor of any building, the owner/user of any lot without a structure thereon, and the owner of any vacant building or other premises shall remove the snow and ice accumulating on the abutting sidewalks within 24 hours after the snowfall has ceased. If snow and ice cannot be removed, the surface shall be sanded or otherwise treated to lessen the hazard for pedestrians until the climate permits removal. |
