The City of Marengo, Illinois, (Population 7,648), a growing community in southwest
McHenry County, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Police Chief.
Marengo is situated in southwest McHenry County along 1-90, Illinois Route 176, Illinois
Route 23 and U.S. Route 20.
The Police Department budget is approximately $2.5 million. The Chief oversees a
department of 16 employees, including three Sergeants, one detective, and eight patrol officers.
The Chief is appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council and reports
directly to the Mayor.
The City is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional with skills in
supervision, staff development and planning who is dedicated to community service and
demonstrates excellent leadership and administrative skills.
The successful candidate must possess the ability to develop a good working relationship
with other area law enforcement agencies and the City’s other Department Heads. A
minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible law enforcement experience is
required.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Police Administration (or closely related field) or
equivalent combination of experience and advanced police leadership training programs
such as FBI National Academy, or Northwestern Center for Public Safety School of Staff
and Command is highly desirable.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $105,000 – $110,000 DOQ plus excellent
benefits. Residency within thirty (30) miles of the City’s corporate boundaries will be
required within one year after appointment.
