  • 6.23 MAILBOX INSTALLATION Amended 25-4-14
    Mailboxes installed along City streets shall be in accordance with U.S. Postal Service regulations. Except as specifically provided for herein, mailbox posts shall not be reinforced or fortified in such a way as to prevent or resist its destruction upon impact. The placement of such mailboxes shall not interfere with street maintenance projects, such as snow plowing and street cleaning. For purposes of this Section 6.23, mailboxes of masonry construction shall be considered reinforced or fortified.
    Exemption: Subject to prior written approval by the City Public Works Director, countersigned by the property owner(s) with a release of liability (“Mailbox Permit”), mailboxes maybe constructed with reinforced or fortified material (“Exempt Mailbox”) where the mailbox is located far enough off the City paved portion of right of way so as not to constitute a potential hazard or interference with City snow plowing and street maintenance work. The Mailbox Permit shall provide for the property owner’s release of liability in favor of the City, its employees and officers for damage or destruction of the Exempt Mailbox. Access to the Exempt Mailbox by the mail carrier shall be provided at the expense of the property owner and shall include a paved surface to eliminate ruts of mud and soil. Property owners of fortified mailboxes existing as of April, 2025, shall be considered in violation of this Ordinance until the Mailbox Permit referenced herein is issued.
