Coral Township was among the first townships in the county to be settled. Its first settler was William Hamilton who located near the present site of Coral Road and US Hwy. 20 in November of 1835. Unfortunately, he died the following spring from injuries sustained assisting Calvin Spencer of Marengo in raising a log cabin. Prior to the settlement in Coral Township, a scattering of Indian wigwams stood in the Township. Indian arrowheads continue to be found throughout Coral Township. The first post office established between Chicago and Galena was also located in Coral Township. However, it was the rich soil of the Township which made people stay and work to improve and continue to cultivate the land. It is this same land and abundance of open space that continues to attract others to Coral Township today.
